The cross, the various forms of volutes and scrolls, and the stepped figures represent the four winds, the clouds, and rain. ...The early French missionaries... described a ceremony in which the high priest faced the rising sun and saluted it with a torch and in turn waved the torch toward the four points from which the winds blew. ...The same ceremony was performed with a tobacco pipe by some groups...'
