...Then the Crayfish People went down into the waters on the earth and began to build up the mud from the bottom. They did this thing until all the lands we know today were formed. And to this very day, they are still building up the mud in this way.

HALITO!

Welcome to the "Louisiana Indian History" web site. Here you will find a basic collection of historical and archeological information about Louisiana Indians. You will also find maps, listings of books and films, pictures of pottery, symbols, and more. I am grateful for all the feedback and information our visitors have given. I will reply to ALL email, but please be patient.

About The Author

My name is Ben and I am of Cherokee/Slavic decent. I have gotten a lot out of my Eastern Cherokee heritage and from the Indain community in my home town of New Orleans and across south Louisiana. This site originally started about 1993 as a three page project teaching myself how the web works. I'm a computer speciallist, and the time came when I had to learn about "html" and all that. It was not going to be a "live" site. Little did I know at that time what I had begun. I was amazed to find so much information about the Indians of Louisiana! So I kept adding and adding more and more information as I found it. The site grew and grew and grew into what it is today! Over 20 pages! I have little time for it now. But I will keep this site up for as long as I can. I hope the Indian communities of Louisiana will find it acceptable.

A Note On Art Work and Terminology

Almost all the graphics you see at the top of the pages and as backgrounds are taken from designs that were made by Louisiana Indians, and date back to Pre-History. They have been scanned as line art and colored in various ways to suite the format of the web. I use this artwork in an educational way, not to profit from it. Nothing is sold at this site.

About The Photography

All of the photos I've begun to use on this site are my own. I use a Sony Mavica MVC-FD71 digital camera, and I love it. All photos are copyrighted.

Its "Indian", Not "Native American"

This site will use the term "Indian" as much as we can. This is based on the view that everyone in the America's can be considered native "Americans". We are not native "Americans", our people were here eons before the Druids ever existed. We are Native. We are the "First Peoples". We are Biloxi, Lakota, Aniwiya, Hopi, Tunica, etc. If we MUST be grouped into one term, this site prefers "Indian". More technically acurate would be "First" or "Original Peoples". Please remember that the term "Native American" is NOT plitically, nor technically correct. First and foremost, we are "People". To be respected and honored as we respect and honor others.

Your Comments and Questions

I hope that you enjoy what is presented at this site. And that you learn something new. I'm getting great mail with some good questions and suggestions. Many people are asking for geneology information about specific tribes in Louisiana and how to track their lineage. This site is a personal project, not the work of a University or any kind of large organizaion. What is on these pages is about all I have. I'm not a historian, nor a Geneologist. But I WILL answer all email. If I don't have an answer or lead for you, I will contact friends who may have an answer for you. I'll do my best.

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!

Thanks to the U.S. Post Office for clearing up the copyright issues for NON-COMMERCIAL sites, so I can show reproductions of their stamps honoring Indian Dancers.

Also, thanks to the ST. MARTINVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY and their collection of books documenting Indians in Louisiana.

Also, thanks go out to Teena, Alvin, my parents, Arla, Twin Eagles, LIHA, Bev and Pete, Hey Muh!, Auntie Adrian, A.I.M., Skili, Cheryl, and too many others who've sustained, inspired, and taught me so much along the way. Wado!
