Riding my airplane.
I am fairly new to road bikes. I became interested in triathlons. Now one of the greatest pleasures in my life is getting out on a clear day and hammering 30 miles. Weird.
As I cruise along I often find myself thinking I am flying an airplane. I am struck by the number of similarities between flying an airplane and road biking. Aerodynamics are essential to both for speed. Both a bike and an airplane are devices which give me the ability to travel distances far greater than I could on foot. They are both constructed of lightweight medal tubing, with cables running about to control various gizmos. Crashing on either is hazardous. With both it helps to be a good mechanic.
Its amazes me how easy it is to move considerable distances on my bike. Dave Scott suggests we break down our race into easy segments, setting several small mini-goals along the way. My bike helps me to do this. I can focus on a 10 mile stretch and put my head down and crank, and wo-la, almost like magic, I am there. I love my bike.
