Old
Louisiana
Buildings

This page is just some old buildings that I have taken photos of.  Most of them are of old stores or old forgotten homes and plantations.  Some I do not have dates for.  I also have photos of The Cabin Restaurant & The Cajun Village on the page listed below.

These photos are all thumbnails so click on them to see a larger photo.

Caire Landing & Co.
c.1860

Caire Store
c.1897

St. Joseph Store
c.1850's

Acy Store
c.????

The Caire Landing was a place where showboats used to stop to entertain there twice a year until the 1930's.  The landing was moved back from the river in1881 due to the levee being moved.

The Caire store was the largest store around and a very popular place to meet.  It is next door to the Landing.

St. Joseph Store sits next to St. Joseph Plantation.  It is still open for business and has never closed.  A great place to stop for something cold to drink on a hot day!

The Acy store is in the St. Amant area.  I do not know the date of it or any other information.

Bel House

Bel House
c.1873

Clinton Courthouse

Lemann Bro. Store
c.1876

Ascension Bank

The Bel House, a Creole style town house, is located in the Historical District of Donaldsonville.

The courthouse is of course in Clinton but I do not know the date of the building.

The Lemann Brothers Store was a general merchandise store and one of the biggest around.  It is also located in the Historical District of Donaldsonville.  It now serves as a museum.

I have no information about the old bank building but it is also in the same Historical District.

Chustz Store

Chustz Store

Orange Grove Store

Rougon Store

All of the stores above are located on the west bank of the river north of Port Allen up to the New Roads area.

I have no information on the Chustz Store but note the old Esso pump out front.

The Orange Grove store is still open for special events.

The Rougon store is in the town of that name and was built in 1881.

Whitney c.1790

Whitney Store

Old home

Old Train Depot

The first two photos are of the old Whitney store which sits on the plantation site.  The small building in the first photo appears to be a dove cote.  The old home also sits on Whitney Plantation.

The train depot is thought to be from the Edgard area but it now sits on the site of a sugar mill.  If it is the Edgard station then it would date to 1875.  Although it does not show in the photo there are seperate entrances for the Colored and the Whites.

Mount Hope

Victorian Home,
Donaldsonville

Carriage House
at Germania

Wolf-Schlesinger
c.1880

Houmas House

The Mount Hope building appears to serve as both a gate house and a dove cote.  It sits on the plantation by that name in Baton Rouge.  It is a private home and I have no information on it.

The victorian home is just one of several beautiful homes located in Donaldsonville.

The old Carriage House is on Germaina Plantation and was built abour 1885.  The entire Germania Plantation complex is in very bad shape an is falling to ruins fast.

The Wolf-Schlesinger home is located in St. Francisville and is now a Bed & Breakfast.

The last building above is a Garconniere or Bachelor quarters.  There are two of them on Houmas House Plantation and they date to about 1840.

LeBoeuf Home

Poplar Slave Cabins

Germania Plantation

Germania

The first photo is of a large old home that I just recently found out the name of and some of the history thanks to a relative that saw it on my pages.  Click Here to read more about it!

The next photo is a row of slave cabin falling to ruin on the Poplar Grove Plantation.

The last two photos are of some old building on Germania Plantation.  Maybe an old barn and the overseers home.  This plantation is almost beyond saving and is in the Donaldsonville area.  Below are some links to more photos of the home.  But I did not take these photos, I scanned them from another publication (Vestiges Of Grandeur by Richard Sexton).  This is a wonderful book and you should be able to view it in any library or buy it from any major book store.  I get so many requests about this home that I desided to include a few photos here.  Photo1Photo2Photo3Photo4
