In May of 1999 I traded in my Dodge Ram 4X4 for a new GMC Sierra. I have always been into performance, and after a couple of four wheel drives I was ready to jump back in. Not being too sure of buying a first year production, I did my research and took the plunge. The first order of business was a Hypertech PPIII. This worked well, and got rid of that annoying 100 MPH speed cut-off. Flowmaster sound cannot be beat in my opinion, so a single 3" 2 chamber custom install from the Y-pipe back was put in place. Next came the biggest bang for the buck, Nitrous. I was severely plagued with traction problems, go figure. Next I purchased a factory posi unit and had it installed. While looking at a truckin' magazine, I notice the Arizona Speed-Marine headers. I jumped on the web, looked at their claims and called my local hop-up shop, Thunder Racing, and placed my order. Running 13.39 @ 102 would be enough for most people, not me. The truck was dropped 4/6 with DJM components to aid with aerodynamics. To round out the drop Centerline Thruster wheels, 17X9.5 &17X8 were complemented with Nitto 275/50 and 255/50 rubber. The netx order of business is the Art-Carr 2800 stall torque converter and Transgo shift kit. After the stall, I had my PCM updated with the latest calibrations from GM. Even though I un-installed the programmer, it would not work with the new program. I had to send my programmer back to Hypertech and have it updated up to the current revision. The Transgo and the torque management of the computer do not get along. The truck chirps second, falls on its face, then picks back up. The only options are to remove the shift kit or get Ed Wright at www.fastchip.com to remove it with custom programming. The nitrous does not work well at all with the current setup. It can never decide what gear to be in and is constantly between gears. The last trip to the track netted me consistent 14.6's @ just under 92 MPH. The Art-Carr converter was worth .5-.6 in the 1320 at about the same MPH. Since I have added a Street Scene Speed Grill and their Cal-vu mirrors. A roll pan will be next along with a hidden hitch. I'll take off the spare and tailgate and see what happens. Electric fans will be after the roll pan. By then I will have decided on the next motor mods. You can bet an F-body cam or larger will be installed for sure. I am kicking around the idea of a 6.0L conversion and superchargers as they will be available soon. |
