I am Al Gerek, a retired Air Force and during my career had spent a total of 12 years in Germany.  I first was at Rothwesten in 1955, later moved to RAF Celle.  I married a girl,  from Hannover (Celle) back in 1957.   My wife's name is Helene, and her maiden name is Ilse.  We are still married and live in Vacaville, Ca. (50NE of San Francisco).  Some of the best years of my life were my years in Germany, so I truly enjoyed all the nice info and photos on your site. I spent a total of 12 years in Germany.  I think about Kassel, Rothwesten and the
little Gasthouse down on the Fulda river  quite often (rote Katze & graue Katze) .
Thank you so much.  Take Care,
Al Gerek

Margaretha Commandeur Arruda - Heerhugowaard
Holland.
 {by her husband}
I  was stationed at Rothwesten from mid 1953 to late 1955.  While in Germany I took a leave and went to Holland. The guys had been there on maneuvers and loved it.  I met this girl, Margaretha, maiden name Commandeur, in a hobby shop in Alkmaar, Holland.  Well, you guessed it. She was the one for me.  However, the language barrier hindered that a little. We, Larry Hill, Ronald Askins and myself were there for 10 days. On the way back by train to Germany, I confided with Hill how much I really liked her. His response was "if you really feel that way, let her know about it"  Well, I wrote to her in care of the Hobby shop and to my surprise I got a response.  To make a long story short, we wrote in simple English (for her to understand from a dictionary).  When I left Germany in Dec 1955, nothing had be set.  I continued to write her and finally after getting out of the A.F., I went back as a civilian in Jan 1957.  I stayed with her and her family (12 brothers & sisters).  We got married there and we've been married now for 42 years.
